Attending Veterinarian
Position Type: Independent Contractor
Contract Term: Month-to-month
Compensation: Negotiable monthly retainer; additional services billed separately
Schedule: One scheduled on-site visit every two calendar months, with telephone and email consultation between visits
Position Summary:
The Attending Veterinarian provides veterinary oversight and care for a diverse animal collection in an aquarium and wildlife facility. This position works collaboratively with animal-care staff and leadership to support animal health, welfare, preventive medicine, and regulatory compliance while exercising independent professional medical judgment.
The ideal candidate values open communication, respects the knowledge and experience of husbandry professionals, and develops practical care recommendations in partnership with the animal-care team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide, direct, or coordinate appropriate veterinary care for animals maintained at the facility.
- Review and recommend improvements to disease prevention, biosecurity, quarantine, and pest and parasite control programs.
- Advise on nutrition, diagnostics, treatment, pain management, emergency care, and humane endpoints.
- Provide or direct appropriate care before and after medical procedures.
- Perform, direct, or arrange euthanasia and necropsies when appropriate and legally permissible.
- Review, update, and document approval of the written Program of Veterinary Care and applicable environmental enhancement plans at least annually and whenever necessary.
- Conduct scheduled facility walkthroughs with an animal-care representative to observe animals, address concerns, and review relevant husbandry and medical records.
- Complete the veterinary visit checklist and provide a written summary of observations, recommendations, and follow-up actions after each scheduled visit.
- Provide reasonable telephone and email consultation during agreed availability.
- Provide routine beak, wing, and nail trims for parrots when medically and behaviorally appropriate.
- Maintain current emergency contact instructions and coordinate alternate veterinary or emergency hospital coverage when unavailable.
- Promptly communicate significant animal-health, welfare, or regulatory concerns to designated facility representatives.
- Maintain medical records consistent with applicable law and professional standards.
- Communicate the anticipated scope and cost of additional services and obtain authorization before providing them, except when an emergency makes advance approval impracticable.
- Support continuity of care and transfer of relevant medical information when veterinary coverage changes.
Required Qualifications:
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.
- Current veterinary licensure and any registrations or permits required to provide services in the facility’s state or ability to acquire state specific requirements.
- Ability to evaluate and manage the veterinary needs of the animal collection and coordinate referrals or additional expertise when appropriate.
- Familiarity with applicable animal-welfare requirements and veterinary care documentation.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and recordkeeping skills.
- Professional liability insurance at agreed coverage limits.
- Ability to attend scheduled on-site visits and provide consultation between visits.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with zoological, aquarium, wildlife, avian, or exotic animal medicine.
- Experience developing and reviewing Programs of Veterinary Care and environmental enhancement plans.
- Experience working collaboratively with keepers, curators, and animal-care leadership.
Service Arrangement:
The monthly retainer covers agreed routine oversight, scheduled visits, consultation, and program review. Clinical examinations, diagnostics, medications, hospitalization, additional visits, and services requiring anesthesia or specialized resources are billed separately under the services agreement.
Emergency and after-hours arrangements will be established in advance. The position does not require continuous 24-hour availability unless separately agreed.
